Dr. Martin Luther King Program

Martin Luther King
The annual Burlington Dr. Martin Luther King program will be held on Sunday, January 21st 2007 at 3:00 p.m. in Burlington City hall. Those to be acknowledged at the annual MLK event are: Sister Janice Ryan, Peace and Justice Center, Lydia Clemmons, Jackson Clemmons, Connie Price.

Multicultural Center Community News


During the fall semester, 2007,  5 UVM students were assigned to the Multicultural Center this fall as a community service project and there is one student from Woodbury College continuing through the Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration.

There is great interest from many community partners in the center and the furure looks very promising.

Judy Richardson to Speak at MLK Remembrance


Judy Richardson, Associate Producer of the six time Emmy Award winning Eyes on the Prize will deliver the 2006 Burlington Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. address on Sunday, January 15, at 4 p.m. in the Contois Auditorium of Burlington City Hall.

Ms. Richardson is the Co-Producer of Malcolm X: Make it Plain. Ms. Richardson bring a long-time civil rights background to her Burlington address. Her documentary work has brought her experiences with the Civil Rights Movement in the South and activist groups in the North together.

Ms. Richardson has authored numerous articles and lectures nationally about the movement, its history and its relevance to issues of today.

The 2006 Burlington King remembrance is co-sponsored by the City of Burlington, Church Street Marketplace and United Way of Chittenden County.

Conference Overview

Establishing New Partnerships in Our Communities of Color in Vermont will bring together  community members, service providers, legal experts and healthcare advocates to explore the complexities of diversity and its impact on the community. The workshops, presentations and speakers will address a variety of topics relating to women to provide an understanding, creative and safe environment where this diverse population can come together and openly share their experiences and ideas, and seek solutions to changes that create barriers to diversity.

The featured speaker will be the Hon. Jean Augustine, P.C. M.P. former Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, Canada, was born in the Caribbean island of Grenada. In 1993, Ms. Augustine became the first black woman elected to the Parliament of Canada. From 1994 to 1996 she was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada, in February 2002 she was elected chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade. In 2004 Ms. Augustine retained her seat in Parliament with a landslide victory.
