Conference Overview
Establishing New Partnerships in Our Communities of Color in Vermont
will bring together community members, service providers, legal
experts and healthcare advocates to explore the complexities of
diversity and its impact on the community. The workshops, presentations
and speakers will address a variety of topics relating to women to
provide an understanding, creative and safe environment where this
diverse population can come together and openly share their experiences
and ideas, and seek solutions to changes that create barriers to
diversity.
Featured Speaker:
The Honorable Jean Augustine, P.C.M.P., former Secretary of State for
Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, Canada.
The Hon. Jean Augustine, P.C. M.P. former Secretary of State for
Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, Canada, was born in the
Caribbean island of Grenada. Before entering politics, Ms. Augustine
was an Elementary School Principal with the Toronto District Catholic
School Board.
In 1993, Ms. Augustine became the first black woman elected to the
Parliament of Canada. From 1994 to 1996 she was the Parliamentary
Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada, in February 2002 she was
elected chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and
International Trade.
In 2004 Ms. Augustine retained her seat in Parliament with a landslide
victory.
